What is the hardest but most fulfilling role you have ever had?

one of my daughter’s first pieces of artwork :)

In 1994, The Parents Day Resolution was unanimously passed by congress to recognize the fourth Sunday in the month of July as a day to celebrate parents across our nation.  ParentsDay.com explains it as “On this day each year, Americans recognize outstanding parents, celebrate the teamwork in raising children, and support the role of parental guidance in building a strong, stable society.”

Makes total sense, but who knew?  Well, I admit that I didn’t; and, that means my husband and I have been missing out these last 15 years enjoying a day that celebrates parenting and parenthood.

If asked what is the hardest but most fulfilling role you have ever had?   My answer would be a parent; and, I believe my husband would answer the same way.

Our daughter brings us tons of joy, love, and laughter.  Plus, as a family we simply have a lot of fun together.  Yet, being responsible for molding and training up a child to become a contributor to this world is not easy.  Instilling our basic family values that often goes against the values of the world is a battle that we have to fight each and every day.  So, yes I am being brutally honest to share that being a mother is the hardest role I have ever had in my life but it is the most gratifying too!

Like most families we value God, integrity, decency, kindness, compassion, honesty and more; yet, we are held accountable to teach our child how the world is hard, how everyone isn’t kind; and, yes that there is just pure evil present that pounces on opportunities. So, beware.

While it is frightening to know this I also know that none of us can approach life frightened and scared. So, I catch myself, challenge my thoughts and change the script to encourage my daughter to use her moral compass and embrace the good in the world; but, don’t be naïve because there is bad in the world too.  I do this because my daughter should feel free to be and to become the woman God has already designed and proclaimed her to be. I don’t need to project my worst fears on to her. I just need to help her prepare and be aware.

She is human and she will sometimes get it wrong, like we all do, but that is why for me and my family we recognized that God’s mercies are new each and every single day; and, parenting takes patience, understanding and forgiveness which isn’t always easy to have and/or give. And, like my parents did for me and my siblings we too are on our knees praying that God will protect and keep our daughter.

We also know it’s important to show-up and be present, know what’s going on in her life.  Even at those times where she doesn’t necessarily want us involved.  As parents we attend every event, if we know in time, we put it on our calendars and show up.  We realize that it’s a luxury to be able to be present for everything and we don’t take it for granted.  My daughter and I have fun laughing about a time when she was in 7th grade and she asked me not to come to her basketball games anymore.  I looked at her and replied, “That will never happen.”  Years later she laughs or I should say giggles with delight that I didn’t listen to her and that she knew even at that age that her parents would unequivocally be there for her.

As we prepare to celebrate National Parents Day this Sunday, July 23rd I plan on being intentional in celebrating that it takes teamwork to raise a child that will help build a strong and stable society.   It is a privilege to be a parent.  I thank God for all of the outstanding parents out there… you know who you are … you show-up, inspire and encourage even when it gets hard.  Happy Parents Day!

School's Out for the Summer!

Hello summer! While the official start to summer was yesterday, June 21st; when school is out it always kicks off the unofficial start of summer for many of us!  Here, we just experienced the first full year of school being attended in-person/in-class since the pandemic!

Although I do think that each year, summer becomes shorter and shorter for our students. To be honest, we already have received the summer Reading list and the summer Math package for our daughter's preparation to enter her junior year of high school. Like many, we have learned back-to-school shopping lessons the hard way; so, we have already begun our school shopping for the fall to make sure we have more choices.

The National Retail Federation (NRF) shared the following back-to-school trends to continue to watch:

  1. online shopping via smart phones still dominates;

Most of us browse and buy online using our smart phones and I do not see that changing.  It is easy and convenient meaning we can shop wherever we are.

  2. pre-pandemic high investment in technology due to online learning continues to decrease;

Schools and parents made huge investments to continue educating our kids during the pandemic, now that our kids are back to school full time technology investments will continue to decline; although, I would argue that online learning will continue to grow.

  3. traditional back to school items will continue to grow by double digits;

Traditional back to school items include apparel, accessories and supplies and it is no surprise that in-person learning is driving these increases.

  4. social media continues to influence back to school purchases.

And, last but not least social medial will continue to influence back to school purchases and I do not see that changing in the near future.

All of the trends above seem to make natural sense.  While most of us our budget conscious when shopping; I believe that parents are a little looser with our money when it comes to spending for back to school items.

Are there ways you can help influence and take advantage of early back to school purchases of your brand and/or services?

10 Tips I would tell my younger self …

Photo Editor: Sara Jarvis

This month I am having a birthday; and, as I look back on my life there are 10 Tips that I would tell my younger self to help prepare and pave my life’s journey.

Here they are:

  1. Love the special people in your life each day like you will never see them again because there will be a day that you won’t be able to see, spend time or hug them again here on this earth …

  2. It is okay to cry. It is a natural emotion and it will help you be able to move forward.

  3. Always be authentic and speak your truth (hopefully kindly).

  4. Don’t be too serious; Laugh as much and as often as you can!

  5. There is a season for everything including people coming into and/or leaving your life. Embrace it and don’t resist because there is a reason for everything.

  6. Be in the moment and appreciate it whether that moment is a good or not so good feeling.

  7. Be determined, don’t give up and persevere.

  8. Love yourself through self-care, forgiveness and the people you surround yourself with.

  9. You don’t always have to talk. Stop.  Be slow to speak and quick to listen.

  10. When you wake up rejoice in every single day because it is not a given.

Maybe some of these life tips have resonated with you too.  I hope you enjoyed my conversation with my younger self.  Cheers to A Happy Birthday to me!

Touring College$ with a Poker Face – Here’s how we did it!

Image Credit: Jarvis Consultants, April 2023

My family and I spent the better part of last week touring colleges in the great state of North Carolina. Our daughter is a sophomore in high school and pre-planning for college has started! The older I get the more I understand that each life transaction can be methodically approached as a business decision. As a professional consultant, it was clear to me which colleges invested in these three things:

  • the process of building relationships

  • creating and communicating clearly with marketing materials

  • training their people to make sure their brand image was appropriately reflected

Our daughter saw a total of four schools each with pre-scheduled tours. She is using a specific matrix to evaluate each school which includes:

  • her program of interest and its requirements;

  • the vibe of the campus;

  • the dorms and living space; and, of course

  • the food – both quality and quantity that is accessible

I on the other hand, evaluated it as I would approach any business decision/investment.

Both my husband and I were schooled to always have a poker face while touring (because we realize that your kid will see your glee and pick the opposite school – primarily just because they are teenagers).   We both took in the total experience the following way and then discussed our thoughts.  Here are the graded results of our conversation:

  •  Pre-communication:  A+

All of the schools got this right! Each sent a confirmation email welcoming our daughter, confirming her tour time and what to expect. Plus, a day or two before, all sent very specific parking instructions detailing where to go once we arrived at the school. One school went the extra yard and had a greeter in the parking lot!

  •  On-site: B

Check-In:  Half of the schools got this right from the beginning to the end. All had greeters which would be expected; some offered drinks and presented a visually appealing chocked full of information presentation by an adult admissions employee/representative.   Goodies were provided at check-in. 75% gave some kind of branded premium, which the kids loved. In this case, they provided tee shirts and even a back pack.

Tour: 75% of the colleges had student led tours which our daughter loved hearing the information straight from students. She could relate to the college kids better. Some were better trained than others, but they all were really great.

Goodbyes: Only one college gave us follow-up information that was pre-planned with our daughter’s name on it. The tour guide actually gave us a card with her name and email along with the assigned academic admissions counselor’s name and email for my daughter to reach out with any additional questions. We were like WOW and impressed!

  •  Follow up:  A+

All of the colleges sent us a follow up email thanking us for coming and visiting their school with a survey link.

Ultimately, it is about our daughter’s happiness in getting the best education, life’s lessons and life-long friends.  She will be the final decision maker. In this case, we are merely the influencers.  Believe me, we do not take our role as parents and influencers lightly; but, we do know this is one of the most important decisions of her life.  We will encourage, nudge and pray; all the while wearing our poker faces, doing our homework, strategizing and still hoping to be dealt a royal flush!

Wish us luck as we plan to tackle two more states touring more colleges!

How stressed are you?

A stress-free moment for me!

April is National Stress Awareness Month. I appreciate that it comes on the heels of March Madness because the frenzy is real; and, I am not just talking about basketball. It seems like this time of year becomes a little chaotic.  It does not matter if I am talking to a client or a friend, we are all experiencing a super busy season. March Madness basketball capitalizes it well. Endless games, having to perform at peak and at the same time trying to just survive the current challenge.  If they do not perform and they are not at their peak, then their team is eliminated.  It is over.  Okay, well that analogy is a little dramatic for us, but…

  • We all run fast and furious at one time or another.  There is no one on this planet that can escape the feeling of stress. Checking in with how you are feeling is important. As an entrepreneur, mom and wife, I make it a point to do a check-in on my stress levels.  Here is how I know when I am off balance:

  • When I gain a couple of pounds and cannot shake it off in a week, even when I am extra careful about my food choices.

  • When I snap at my family for something minor like not eating the kiwis fast enough and letting them spoil.

  • When I wake up in the middle of the night and I cannot go back to sleep because I can and welcome sleep at any time night or day.

  • When I feel extra tired and my body literally starts to hurt.

All of these symptoms for me are stress red flags to stop, exhale and be in the moment. When I am mindful and I concentrate on how I feel, I am able to address one body part at a time and release the stress. Everybody is different but here are some stress relievers that work for me:

  • Epsom salt or apple cider baths

  • Massages, facials and any kind of spa treatments

  • Stretching, long walks or any kind of exercise

Drinking lots of water helps to slow me down and at the same time it helps me feel more energetic.

Do not get me wrong, I do not have it all figured out.  Stress is a part of my life.  But, I just do not want it to keep me off-balance for a long period of time.  During stress awareness month, I just wanted to share some tips on how I stay in-tuned with my body to help me be aware of stress in my life. For you, the symptoms might be different; and, the solutions that help work your stress out might be different too.

The most important point of this conversation is to be aware of the stress; how you are feeling; what you are going through and how you are managing it. It is difficult to escape stress but it is possible to prevent and manage elements of stress before it gets the best of us.

So please stop, exhale and be aware of stress.

Happy National Stress Awareness Month!

Celebrate the Women In Your Life Every Single Day!

Whether it’s Helen Reddy’s “I am Woman”; or, Alicia Keyes’ “Girl on Fire” or pick a song that resonates with you on the topic of strong women that persevere; each lyric represents common traits that are inherent in women.

What better time to discuss this topic than during Women’s History Month?

I have mixed feelings about Women’s History Month.  One side of me argues that Congress took too dang long to pass a resolution recognizing a month to celebrate all that women have accomplished; all that we are accomplishing and all of our future accomplishments.  On the other side of the argument, women should be celebrated each and every single day not just recognized between March 1st and March 31st every year.  Not one person can legitimately deny that women need to be universally recognized for our contributions in a society; where, unfortunately, we are not universally equal.

While we have “come a long way baby”, we are still climbing that steep hill to fight for equitable pay, benefits and psychological mind-share of the privilege that men have always held in our society.

Even though the playing fields are not equal, women STILL have achieved so much with smaller resources than our counterparts.  It is common knowledge that women lack in pay and benefits in all the top fields including sports.  The most notable discrepancy in recent history is the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team who contributed higher revenues to the U.S. Soccer Federation but earned only a fraction of what the men earned.  Thankfully, the women soccer players got organized, obtained legal support and fought the injustices and won!  As of May 2022, professional U.S. soccer players will earn the same pay regardless of their gender on national teams.  Kudos to the players for taking the fight and facts to the U.S. Soccer Federation; but, unfortunately, it had to be done through the legal system to get the type of results that were deemed equitable and sustainable as a precedent.

Women overcome, each and every single day, the psychological and real obstacles put in our way.  Regardless of the song, the lyrics get it right using words like strong, invincible; and, phrases like girl on fire, walking on fire.  Let me be clear that there are strong men who are secure by our sides (like my husband, brothers and more in my life) who encourage us to achieve; embrace us as partners and cheer us on as women who roar and walk on fire!

Celebrate the women in your life every single day!

What are you reading?

March is deemed National Reading Month honoring Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  Reading helps us in so many different ways. Like most parents, we started our daughter reading early. We read to her and encouraged her to read even when she was too young to read; she would just look at the pictures. One of her favorite books when she was a baby was “Goodnight Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown.  It’s a timeless classic. I now gift it to parents for their babies.

One of the gifts that reading has given our daughter, that is so obvious now that she is a teenager, is a vast vocabulary. Sometimes I am in awe with her sentence structure and the correct use of words that are beyond her years.  We credit that behavior with reading.  Not only does reading give one a vast vocabulary but for me, it helped shaped my imagination; as I am sure it has helped shaped your imagination too.  I know that during the pandemic, locked down, it was a true escapism to be able to read.  Currently, my daughter’s English class is reading Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  It’s not necessarily a book I would pick but it does get both the imagination and escapism stimulated!  My daughter is enjoying the teacher’s selection.  It’s the PDF version … boy has high school changed!

For me, reading is a personal experience. I still like to read physical books and magazines. Turning the pages brings me into the moment of experiencing the act of reading the book. In short, it brings me into the moment where I am only focused on the book. When I was a young adult, I heard someone who I admired say that they always make sure to have a fiction and a non-fiction book that they are reading depending on their mood.  So, I adopted that approach to reading a couple of decades ago.  I get a cup of tea or a glass of wine depending on the time of day and my mood; and, I get comfortable and start reading.  In fact, it’s one of my favorite pastimes on a beach vacation.  It gives me a sense of calm while still using my brain (in most cases) that I appreciate it.

Don’t judge me but I’m being authentic sharing with you what I’m currently reading…

If you’re looking for something to read, please take a look at some of the following books…and full disclosure, three of my books are included which you can find on Amazon; or, if you want an autographed copy please go to www.jarvisconsultants to order your copy.

Ultimately, reading books help to open our world a little wider.  I hope you take some time to participate in National Reading Month this month honoring Dr. Seuss while also enjoying all of the possibilities that each page turn gives you!  Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Love, Life & Retail…Top 3 Retailers I miss the most…

When we think of February, many of us think of Valentine’s Day and the people that we love and who we celebrate being in our lives.  I started thinking about the retail brands that I have loved and lost over the years.  Retailers come and go.  Some have left the market and I have not even missed them; while others who have said goodbye, I really miss having in my shopping life. And, if I am honest with myself I sometimes think about these brick and mortar stores and ask myself,  “Why didn’t they make it”?

Here are the Top 3 retail brick and mortar brands that I miss the most:

#3 Toys R Us – it was so easy, convenient and affordable.  It was great to walk the Toys R Us aisles and play with the toys; get overstimulated with the bright colors and the noises coming from the toys.  I recently saw an area in a department store with the Toys R Us branded sign; and, I took a look.  The section was not even close to the original Toys R Us! Honestly, it was sad.  A once iconic brand!  It was so near and dear to my heart that I wrote a blog about it when I thought it was coming back.  I was super excited but as far as I know, it has not happened.  Here is the blog.

#2 The Bombay Company – I loved this brick and mortar store! It is so nostalgic for me.  When I was living in New York City we had a great store on the Upper East Side on Third Avenue and 87th Street.  There were a number of reasons I loved this store and miss its brand.  I loved that it had stylish pieces that would fit nicely in a NYC apartment; I loved the uniqueness of the pieces big and small; I loved that when I walked into this store I knew that I was going to find a special treasure.  While, at the time, I could not buy everything I wanted from the store, it helped me dream!

And the Top #1 Spot goes to …

#1 Pier One Imports – I cannot be the only one on earth missing Pier One Imports!  This was my “go to store”.  It filled any gaps of chipped buffet plates for white dishes; or, shattered wine glasses.  My guests always commented on the beauty of paper goods at my parties.  Pier One Imports always had a wonderful assortment of paper goods that you could not find anywhere else.  Believe it or not, I am still using everyday dishes (the complete set) that I bought from there more than two decades ago.  They look great and have held up to the dishwasher over and over again.  Most importantly, I miss their seasonal merchandise that was always unique whether Halloween, Christmas or Easter. I could always find something to add to my home décor.

I miss all three of these retail outlets in my love life of retail; but, Pier One Imports covets the #1 earned spot because it was truly part of my shopping life; one of those stores that I would pop into once a week to just see what they had.  I would see Pier One Imports in different cities or states and make it a point to stop and shop to see if the merchandise was that different from my home store.

I would love to hear about your Love, Life & Retail brands you have been forced to say goodbye to and miss.  Please share them with me at sonya@jarvisconsultants.com.

How are your New Year’s Resolutions going?

It is the end of the first month of the New Year. So, I thought I would check-in and see how your New Year’s resolutions are going. Did you know that most New Year resolutions are broken by now?  A recent Forbes article on this subject shared unofficial dates that recognize the failure of achieving New Year’s resolutions.  According to this article, “Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day”, is January 17th and “Quitters Day” is noted as the second Friday in January.

Wow, take a second to think about that!  The willpower to achieve most New Year’s resolutions barely lasts past two weeks!

If we made our business goals like we make New Year’s resolutions, few would be accomplished.  So, I started thinking about why do we set ourselves up for personal failure?

Why are our New Year’s resolution goals so lofty?  Why not set more achievable goals?

There are common resolutions that most of us set as cited in this same article by the Forbes Health/OnePoll survey which found that the most popular resolutions are general like:

  • Improve fitness

  • Lose weight

  • Improve finances

I always suggest to my clients that they use the SMART method when approaching goals.  Goals should be SPECIFIC, MEASUREABLE, ACHIEVABLE, REALISTIC and TIMELY.  The same approach should be used when setting your personal goals like New Year’s resolutions.

  • Instead of “improve fitness”, what about, “Increase your steps by 5,000 a day”; or “Walk a 15-minute mile three times a week for the first 30 days”? Once achieved, adjust goal upward.

  •  Instead of “lose weight”, what about, “Lose one pound a week until I hit my goal weight”?

  •  Instead of “improve finances”, what about, “Pay off X amount/debt by X month”?

You get the point.  If we break our goals down into more achievable segments then the over-arching goal will be reached.

The same approach is successful for our business plans.  Developing a roadmap that helps you achieve your SMART goals along the way is extremely important.    Here’s a timeless article on Creating a Strategic Plan for Your Business.

You cannot do it all at once, make a plan; stay the course and do not quit or ditch your goals; whether it’s New Year’s resolutions or business goals!  You got this!

5 Recession Tips …for small businesses

We have all been hearing about and anticipating the 2023 recession.  As we head into the New Year, Amazon, Salesforce and Vimeo announced major cuts in excess of 25,000 jobs.  Yet, the recent job numbers came out strong and the market has been rallying based on, I believe, the Feds efforts to slow down the recession.

There is so much contradictory information and we are just not sure what to believe.  Even if you look at the numbers you can argue both ways.  While, I am not an economist, I do know that during these times small businesses have to exhale and come up with a plan.

I would like to share my top 5 recession tips that I use for my own business during contracted markets.  Some of these are easily transferrable to how you approach your household budget during a recession too.

  1. Cash flow – start securing access to cash now; or, if you have cash, start reserving it and HOLD onto it.

  2. Receivables – Be more aware and make sure your outstanding receivables DO NOT go beyond 30 days; know what is going on with your suddenly slow paying customers especially when to expect payment.

  3. Expenses – Make sure there are no surprise expenses popping up!  Be prepared!

  4. Ask the question – Do I really need to invest in this (fill in the blank) to generate revenue or is it a “soft” value-added benefit to my business?  If it generates $ do it; if it is something nice to have for whatever reason, simply wait out the recession.

  5. Be Transparent – whether you have a big workforce, partners, suppliers or contractors you work with, be honest and let them know how they can contribute to your company’s sustainability during this recession.  Believe me, I know first-hand that they are willing to help because your company ultimately contributes to their livelihood.

Do not wait until it is too late. Start making sure you are ready if the economy gets worse.  Being prepared helps you weather the recession season that much better; but, ultimately, the economy is out of your control.  Even still, our fixed costs for our businesses are out of our control too; so we need to identify, concentrate and adjust the business activities that are within our control.

Do not be afraid to still be bold.  Think of the many businesses that were started and have now grown into big brand names during other recessions including Netflix and Microsoft; heck even during the great depression iconic brands were started like Publix Supermarkets and Ocean Spray Cranberries.  Businesses can start and/or grow at any time in a market.  Continue to be smart by being prepared and changing your approach where needed.

And, while our anticipation of the 2023 recession is real; remember Bo Bennett’s words:

As sure as the spring will follow the winter, prosperity and economic growth will follow recession.”

So, hold on tight, another season is coming!

My Top 5 Covid-Related Best Practices

Sign in the Ladies Bathroom at the SONO Mall, Norwalk, CT

Sign in the Ladies Bathroom at the SONO Mall, Norwalk, CT

The pandemic experience was mostly bad but it forced us to tackle Covid-related obstacles. It pushed us to be resourceful.   Business minds have long believed that when you feel the most uncomfortable that it will lead to growth and innovation.

“The unknown makes people uncomfortable.”- Holly Hunter

Holly Hunter’s above sentiment got it right.  The unknown makes us the most uncomfortable.  It brings out all kinds of negative feelings like fear, doubt, and despair, to name a few.  The pandemic had all of us uncomfortable because something like that had not happened in a century.  We did not know what we were facing.  It was an unknown beast that took down our way of living out our daily lives.  And while it did that, it also required us to create a new way of living and working.

The pandemic helped us to create new ideas, make old ideas better and implement tactics that would allow customers to feel comfortable; and company doors to stay open.

Here are my Top 5 Covid-Related Best Practices that Emerged:

  1. Sanitizer Stations & Wipes – Now found at places from retail outlets to churches!

  2. QR Code Menus - No need to touch another menu touched by many. Just scan the menu QR code on the table and you’re all set.

  3. Curbside Pick-up – Yes, it existed pre-Covid; but, it has become more efficient, convenient and more natural to use!

  4. Google classroom – Ultimately there is no substitute for in-classroom teaching; Yet, Google Classroom helped our students stay connected to teachers, classmates and learning!

  5. Hotel cleaning – Honestly I always wondered why our hotel room had to be cleaned every single day; new towels, etc.  Requesting hotel cleaning is so much more effective not only for convenience sake but for the environment too.

Most importantly it allowed each of us to respect the other’s space.  It truly made it real that tomorrow is not promised; and, it showed us that we need each other.  While the COVID virus has not left us, we are desperately trying to adapt to a new world.  In doing so, we are creating sustainable best practices that contribute to each of our lives and businesses.

As we continue to innovate in this ever-evolving world let us not forget that when we feel the most uncomfortable, it will stretch us and lead to our growth.  May you continue to grow in the New Year! Cheers to a healthy and growth-filled year!

Do you show up for the people you love?

My Mom always had a smile on her face.

December 16, 2022 will mark five years since I lost my Mom.  It seems like yesterday.  Life’s significant events feature time and memories like nothing else.  When we celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and honor death anniversaries it makes us look back.

I always say that I am thankful, grateful and blessed.  As I remember my Mom, I am truly all of those feelings because I am able to look back on a life filled with an awesome Mom.  She was strict, funny and loved each of us.  Most importantly, my Mom showed up.  She supported our dreams, activities and lifted us up!

  • She showed up at school to speak with my teachers.

  • She showed up at my volleyball games, track meets and basketball games.

  • She showed up doing all of the traditional Mom stuff – cooking, baking and making sure we were fed!

It sounds easy.  She did this for all six of her children.  Speaking as a Mom of one child, I do not know how she did it.   She made it look easy too.  She made each one of us feel as though we were her favorite.  Oh yeah, and did I mention she also worked.  My father and my mother were life-long partners.  A marriage built on working side-by-side.  It, I am sure, was hard and messy but I was sheltered from all that being the last child of six.  As I look at my siblings and my own marriage I see that we chose partners that would show up.  That is no mistake.

I was fortunate enough this summer to visit my childhood home.  We were traveling to a family gathering in northeast Ohio; and, we had made plans to show our daughter the house I grew up in.  We stopped and the owner invited us to enjoy the property.  The backyard held so many memories – really a life time of fun with:

My visit to my childhood home - the backyard.

  • The annual Labor Day Fish Fry

  • My parents smoking whole ears of corn in the ground – I still can’t replicate that taste

  • Roasting pigs and throwing huge picnics

  • Kicking off family reunions that are now bi-annual get-togethers all around the country.

So, as I honor my Mother’s death anniversary on December 16, 2022, I am truly celebrating her.  I am celebrating her laugh, her willingness to have fun, her kindness, compassion and love of family, friends and neighbors.   I also celebrate Mom each and every single day by showing up for my daughter, my husband and the people that I love.

Mom, I miss you but I know that a part of you lives inside of me and it truly brings a smile to my face.

Think about the people in your life who make you feel happy and loved.  Are you creating the feeling of being loved and happy for someone else?  Do you show up each and every single day for the people you love?

Happy 9th Anniversary, Jarvis Consultants!

It began in December 2013, where I took the leap of faith in my God-given gift of entrepreneurship.  I took my education, corporate experiences and grit and turned my focus to helping independent, boutique-style businesses with the development of Jarvis Consultants, LLC.

December 2022 marks the 9th anniversary of Jarvis Consultants, LLC registering with the state of Connecticut as a business.  Happy Birthday, Jarvis Consultants!

My career was founded in publicly traded and large companies.  I always felt thankful and lucky to work at companies that let me develop my own unique role.  It was an awesome privilege to add on what was lacking; and, what I thought would contribute most to growing and moving each company forward.  What I did not know at the time was that it was not necessarily the company that allowed me to do it.  It was me.  My sheer determination to transform the results through innovating and looking at each situation from an entrepreneur’s perspective versus a corporate employee’s perspective made the difference.

I (was) am thankful for these experiences because each time I innovated and developed something new it pushed me to recognize the entrepreneurial spirit inside of me.  My corporate career showed me the professional I was and wanted to continue to be:

  • Original and Authentic

  • Different and Innovative

  • Forward-Thinking

I wanted to take all of these valued characteristics and present them in my business dealings with freedom and couple it with my love of marketing.  Jarvis Consultants offers the following services and more.

  • Manage complex and multi-faceted projects from the beginning to the end

  • Identify, research and implements new revenue streams

  • Creates C-suite level reciprocal collaboration opportunities

  • Representation of your brand when you need independent contract support.

  • Advisor to small business owners

As an entrepreneur, I have continued to grow professionally and personally over these past nine years; specifically, in my ability and capability in becoming a Thought Leader & Industry Expert; covering topics like:

  • Marketing

  • DEI (Diversity Equity and Inclusion)

  • Retail

  • e-Commerce

And a Book Author, having written and or contributed to the following books:

  • Pandemic Blessings

  • Mentoring Moments

  • Mindful Minutes

There are numerous and various consulting firms.  What makes Jarvis Consultants different?  Jarvis Consultants is different because of my unique approach with each client and how I manage each project with the goal of creating original innovative solutions from typical services like:

  • Developing Content & Delivering Connections

  • Re-inventing marketing approaches

  • Identifying new business opportunities that are sustainable

  • Create Long-term sustainability with programs and partnerships

  • Producing High-performing results while increasing the customer experience

It is clear to all of us that time stops for no one and sometimes I have to pinch myself because I cannot believe it has been nine years since Jarvis Consultants was established.  I say it all the time, I am grateful, thankful and blessed.   "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:12-13.

Happy 9th Anniversary, Jarvis Consultants! Cheers to many more!

When was the last time you thought about devoting “kindness” time to your clients?

Sunday, November 13th was World Kindness Day; and, my daughter’s school used it to kick off all kinds of “kind” activities.  Monday began an Appreciation Week.  Their week included faculty and staff, students and parents; all of the different segments of people who contribute to a vibrant and caring community.  I can’t begin to mention all of the activities that went on this week but I will share a few to give you a glimpse of the types of kindness activities that can be done that go above and beyond.

The school set aside two days to appreciate teachers with a breakfast on Tuesday and a lunch on Thursday.  There was also student appreciate day that gave the kids the opportunity to dress down and play games with prizes for winners.  On Thursday morning, students met parents at the cars and handed them coffee, bagels and a granola bar to show their appreciation.  And, finally on Friday the students will go out to more than 40 organizations in the greater Fairfield County area and volunteer their services for whatever the organization needs.

When was the last time you thought about devoting “kindness” time to your clients?

I’m not talking about a moment or a thought.  What about an entire week or certain days throughout the year exclusively set aside to show your clients that they are appreciated?  What does that look like, right?  Your clients know they are appreciated because you tell them on your monthly invoice.  Well, I’m suggesting put some thought in it; a strategy behind it and plan kindness activities that they will appreciate.

Here’s a list of ways you can let you client know that they are appreciated with some pretty simple kind actions.

  • Hand write a “you are appreciated” card.  (No texting, send it snail mail or hand deliver it).

  • Send them over breakfast, lunch, chocolates or whatever they like. (Better yet if they are local drop it off).

  • Call them and let them you know that they are appreciated and be specific. (Tell them why they are appreciated that way it’s authentic).

  • Make a donation to your favorite charity in their name.  (Giving Tuesday is coming up!).

Show that you appreciate your customers.  Don’t just do it once a year at Holiday Season but think about it through-out the year, the things that you can do or say to let them know that they are appreciated.

Kindness is easy.  It takes a little time but it doesn’t necessarily mean spending a lot of money.  Take the time to show how much you appreciate your clients and others in your life too.

I appreciate you because you take the time to read Sonya’s Blog!  Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

What are you taking for granted?

Beardsley’s Cider Mill & Orchard, Shelton, CT - fall 2022

As Thanksgiving approaches, we all turn towards the people and things in our lives that we are thankful for and want to recognize. Many of us start making our list of blessings.

Yet, how many daily experiences do we take for granted?

My family and I live in New England. The fall season is breathtaking with the summer leaves changing before our eyes to golden and burnt red colors. It is a beautiful site to witness. We are accustomed to welcoming in the change of seasons; and, the vibrant colors of the fall are awesome.

Yes, we look forward to it!  We also expect it and live with and among this period just like the other three seasons.  But this one is different. Nature makes it that way.

On the drive up to Litchfield County, CT

New England welcomes visitors from all around the world. Our state of Connecticut alone welcomes tourists that travel from near and far to see the crisp colors of the fall leaves. Best places and times to see the leaves are reported on and mapped out. I recently spoke to a tourist from Colorado who was visiting Connecticut.  Let’s face it, Colorado is a beautiful nature state too. She was sharing with me how they have been driving around areas of New England to catch the breathtaking fall leaves at peak. Being a little cynical I said, “Colorado must also be beautiful this time of year”. She said, “Not like this”. There you have it. I am living in a fall wonderland and while I think I recognize the beauty, I am not recognizing it as THE BEAUTY that people are getting on a plane to see. It is that majestic!

Pequonnock Valley Wildlife, Trumbull CT - fall 2022

Do I take it for granted?

Yes, sometimes, but for the most part I know that I am incredibly blessed to walk on a trail in a postcard perfect fall scene. Or, drive down a road where golden leaves are lining my ride.

I am thankful for the beautiful season of fall. I am super thankful that I get to experience it in the “Mecca” of the fall of wonderland.

As we prepare for this season of thanksgiving let us be thankful for our daily routines and experiences. Don’t take it for granted. Enjoy it, others do.  Now, it is time to start raking up those leaves.

Reflections of God’s Grace: My Personal Encounter with Breast Cancer – Journal Entry August 14, 2000

As we recognize this month as Breast Cancer Awareness month and everything is pinked-out, I will continue to share entries from a diary that I journaled in for the year of 2000.  I was diagnosed in January 2000 and didn’t finish the entire treatment protocol until December 2000.  It was a tough twelve months both mentally and physically.  Once done, I celebrated with ten days at a Spa in Miami.

Here is an entry from my journal on August 14, 2000.

“I’m forever grateful for God’s love.  HE has been truly awesome in growing my relationship with Christ and with HIM.  I have so many “real life” testimonials.  HE doesn’t have to prove or show me anything; yet, HE is constantly reminding me that HE is carrying me and that HE’ll continue to protect me.  I have so many praises to give HIM; yet, I feel that I still don’t make time to give HIM all the honor, praise and glory!

When I worried that my lymph nodes might be positive; HE answered my prayers (and many others) and they were negative.

When I worried that I was so young to be diagnosed HE put people in the chemo treatment room that had been living with cancer for over 25 years!

When I worried about the future.  HE said trust in me, I have plans for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you.  HE is with me with every breath.  And, I can only praise HIM by saying how good HE is –

HE’s good all the time.  I’m so thankful that I can embrace HIS goodness and accept the strength, the confidence and the love that comes from HIM.

God is doing great things in my life.  Growing into a deeper relationship with Christ because of this will somehow lead me to God’s purpose for my life; so that I can truly glorify HIM in all that I do.

He gives me energy when I need it; HE gives me a clear mind when I need it, because HE knows what my needs are.  I continuously give thanks to HIM for all HE has been, is and will be to me.

Reoccurrence of this disease is not an option.  Because I believe that God has healed my body and I only need to continue to claim that and “move forward” towards HIS will and purpose for my life.  I only hope I can hear this direction and then act on it.

HE has been good –

HE has been faithful to all generations!”

For all of you receiving a breast cancer diagnosis; and, those of you going through treatment, I see you and I have been there too.  Stay strong, focus on you and you will move forward!

Reflections of God’s Grace: My Personal Encounter with Breast Cancer - Journal Entry July 24, 2000

Baha Mar, Nassau, Bahamas: August 2022

October is pink month focused on building awareness and fundraising for research that will lead to a breast cancer cure.

Many of you know that I was diagnosed in January 2000 with stage 1 breast cancer; had a lumpectomy, followed by aggressive chemotherapy (because I was so young); and, ultimately finished the treatment with radiation.  I was Her2 negative; so, there was, at the time, no recommended and/or available treatment after radiation like there is for Her2 positive diagnoses.

I journaled through my experience in the year of 2000.  Here’s an entry from my journal on July 24, 2000.

“Wow!  I can’t believe that it has been almost a month since I’ve made time to sit down and write down my feelings.  In some ways I can’t believe that chemo treatments are done.  It’s as though I have emerged from a dream only to face reality.  Looking back and knowing that the time has passed and yet realizing that you are in the present.

I only have one answer to realizing where I am now and where I was and that’s Almighty God, our Father of Israel has carried me through:

  • The initial diagnosis

  • Surgery

  • Chemotherapy Treatments

And now, today I started the final phase of treatment with a radiologist oncologist consultation.  6 ½ weeks of M-F of radiation to the breast to treat the local area.  Each phase of the process I experience different emotions.  Today, it was more of an emotion of sadness of what’s ahead.

  • Sadness for all of the people in the building that are sick too.

  • Sadness that I have little control over all of the things that are happening – isn’t that weird?  Because I know viscerally that God is in control of all things.

Also, I feel that I was emotional in so many ways today because the fatigue is bothering me.  It’s day #4 after the final chemo treatment and I’m battling the side effects from that.  I’m tired a lot but I’m really trying to stay with walking along the East River every day for 3 miles or so. (Approximately 1 hr.).  It helps me clear my head and also it helps me think through thoughts and process emotions.”

For all of you receiving a breast cancer diagnosis; and, those of you going through treatment, I see you and I have been there too.  Stay strong, focus on you and you will move forward!

What are your terms?

Image Credit: Jarvis Consultants - Resorts World Casino & Hotel NYC

I do think a number of positive things come with aging. One for me is that I am more confident and comfortable with my own terms.

I am confident in how I want to do business and live my life.  I am comfortable displaying those sentiments through my behavior, having tough conversation (if needed) and saying no when it means that my capacity is on overload; and, it will not serve good for any situation. While, I love challenges, being able to discern between what will energize me and what will drain me is important. Self-care is recognized this month and there is a reason that it is needed as a national recognition month.  Many neglect self and pour every ounce in to other people, other things, just other than self.  Take a breath, exhale and determine your terms for living a thriving, healthy and fulfilling life while you have it here on this planet.

I know my terms regarding boundaries and expectations in both my personal and work life. Yes, they intersect for all of us; and, it is always up to us to set boundaries and expectations. Now, I am more courageous than ever before in my life in setting those boundaries. This comfortableness has been a lifetime in the making but I have finally arrived.  I am clear on my terms regarding who I open my life to; open my family to; even who I open my dinner table to. I guard my free time for the most precious people in my life; and/or the charitable organizations that are near or dear to my heart.

I listen. I listen to the discerning voice that has always been with me.   Unfortunately, in the past I have not always given it a priority.  When that discerning voice is singing in my head or punching me in my gut; I stop, listen and act on it.

My terms are simple enough. All of them involve words like trust, honesty, authenticity, reciprocity, kindness and, of course, love. I have been writing about these concepts for years.  I have also been working for years to master these principles in my own life, my own dealings, and my own discernment.

Here is an article that I authored a while back but, once again, it is timeless and speaks to truth, honestly, kindness and authenticity. All from a business perspective.  Yet, it all can be and should be transferred to our personal lives too.

In your quiet time, are you willing to listen to your discerning voice?  Are you willing to act on it?  Do you let your discerning voice tell you who to get into business with? Who to accept a networking meeting with? Have you taken the time to literally write down what your boundaries and expectations are?  If you have, kudos to you because it took me a long time.  If you have not done so, please take the time.  It is up to you to decide.  It makes life that much more enjoyable, healthy and fulfilling.

Breathe, exhale and spend some quiet time and then answer the question:  What are your terms?

When does your "new year" start?

While January 1st always kicks off the calendar year, “back to school” for me, seems more like a more natural start to a new year.

We are trained from an early age that the end of summer means the start of a new school year; and the beginning of a new year of experiences.  Going back to school in the fall, is an instinctive habit that we come to expect because we have done it for so long.  This timing has been a huge part of our formative years.  I do not think that ever leaves us.

As we grow up and become professionals, we work on strategic plans and budgets.  These in-depth and sometimes complex activities (definitely time-consuming) are all driven by the company’s fiscal calendar.  It is just a feeling, but it is my opinion that if I took a poll, most professionals would feel “back to school” aligns with the start of a new beginning or a new year.  I can say that I even felt like this working in the corporate world before I even became a Mom.

Well, this week is “back to school” for my daughter.  She starts her sophomore year of high school.  She is looking forward to new beginnings; exploring new sports, meeting new people and dissecting a frog!  Her school’s theme this year is BE HERE, and BE YOU.

Honestly, I too am feeling that same inherent pull that this is the natural order to start a new year with new beginnings and exploring new things.  BE HERE, and BE YOU can apply to all of us as we “go off to school this fall” to start a new year.

A new beginning that I will be exploring will take place on Jarvis Consultants social media channels and will launch this fall on Saturdays and Sundays.  #SaturdaySentiments will explore our mindfulness with little snippets that challenges us all to be present in the moment; and #LeadershipNugget will post on #SundayMornings focusing on tips on how to be organized and be prepared for the unexpected upcoming work week.

These posts are a direct result of a theme that consistently emerges with my clients from different sectors of business.  Why are Jarvis Consultants’ output services and deliverables consistently different and reliable?  Our approach takes critical and creative thinking exchanges that leads to developing innovative planning, processes and programs.  And, while some of the posts might seem quirky and others seem logical; for Jarvis Consultants it all works together in developing something that is innovative and sustainable.  We hope you enjoy them and as the “new year” starts we challenge you to BE HERE, and BE YOU.

What are you working on?

Through my business, Jarvis Consultants, I have been working on some interesting, life contributing and changing projects.  I am thankful that my expertise and knowledge can provide consulting services to such a dynamic group of Jarvis Consultants clients.

Most of you know that I am a relationship builder. It is important for me to get to know the person representing the brand. Every relationship is different but they are all fundamentally built on the same foundation. It begins with listening and getting to know who the person/organization is and what they want to achieve. And, ultimately how they approach their business objectives; and, quite frankly, life.  I have written about relationship building in the past. Here is a blog on How are you building relationships? And, a timeless article on Getting Involved - 5 ways you can create something powerful through strong relationships.

Due to non-disclosure agreements I cannot share my clients’ names or profiles but here is a snapshot of some of the projects I have been working on:

Content Creation is one of my all-time favorite type of project that is exciting to develop.  It comes in many forms. Lately, I have been working on putting together c-level panels from different types of categories to share insights and foresight regarding his/her specific industry. Because of my ability to foster executive level relationships, this project has been fulfilling for both me and my clients.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) has many approaches and methodologies.  One way to ensure that organizations can have effective DEI programs is to ensure they have the right processes in place.  Specifically, I am working on a project where I help clients work through assessment and implementation of their DEI programs.  This is a really big undertaking where we identify gaps, address them and create action plans that rectify equitable representation, hiring and pay practices that will become part of the organization’s fabric – a very long and involved process.  DEI work is life-changing.  When an organization commits to taking a long look in the mirror and put in the hard work to make sustainable changes for the better of its people and the longevity of the organization, that is brave!

As a business coach, one of the ways I make an impact is that I specialize in helping women in the workforce negotiate compensation packages and navigate tricky organizational structures and/or issues to come out ahead.  In addition, I help them read the red flags before it is too late. I love the success that one of my clients just had in recognizing that she was being under-appreciated. Instead of guessing, I helped her recognize a pattern that was emerging; and, she was able to get ahead of the potential issue.  She addressed it and moved forward.

It is also important for me to continue to develop, learn and contribute. So, I make it a point to invest in myself.  One way that I am doing that is by investing  in my own  life coach. I always say a life coach needs a life coach; just like a therapist needs a therapist.  Life coaches help you evolve by taking an external and objective viewpoint; then helping me, in this case, self-reflect, course correct if needed and adapt.  This is an ever-evolving process but at certain periods in your life you need more than others.  Self-development is important to me; so, another way I invest in myself is by giving back to the community through volunteer projects.   I volunteer by offering services in areas of my expertise to organizations, whether it is marketing, strategy development or plain-old sweat equity. It is important to my well-being to know that I am giving back and showing my gratefulness.

I am working with both for profit and non-profit agencies in lending my expertise to content creation, DEI initiatives and business coaching.  I love that these are interesting, life contributing and changing projects.  If you have a project that you would like external support, please shoot me an email or give me a call and let’s talk.  I would love to know what you’re working on.
